This coming Nov 2nd all across our nation will be Election Day, the epitome of Democracy in action.  Young (at least 18 of course), old, multi ethnic, of any faith, of all economic status –  We The Peoplehave a say in the selection of our leaders; the franchisement of the people; the voice of the masses; the power of the pen over the sword.

I recently volunteered to canvas in my community to get people to come out to vote.  “Fed up, disgusted, infuriated, disappointed”, were just a few adjectives many people used when talking about politicians and politics in general.  Some even lamented that they wished they could vote for Mickey Mouse or Alfred E. Newman (freckled faced, gapped tooth icon of Mad magazine-certainly one of my heroes).

William E. Simon (businessman/philanthropist) once lamented that, “Bad politicians are sent to Washington by good people who don’t vote”. For Americans, it boils our blood when we see on the evening news the burning and defiling of our flag by some unruly mob, orchestrated by regimes who hate our very existence. While certainly less violent and conspicuous, when we Americans fail to vote out of apathy, disdain or failure of conviction, we are feeding those flames just as if we were pouring gas on that fire.

Our candidates may not win, or our amendment may not pass, but our voice still needs to be – actually, it would be more accurate to say, has to be heard, however slight we may think it is.  Our sixth president, John Quincy Adams wisely said, “Always vote for principle.  Though you may vote alone, you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost”.  If you give up, and choose to make excuses why you can’t or won’t vote then you have made the words of Joseph Stalin become a truism, “The people who cast votes don’t decide an election, the people who count the votes do”.

Please make the time to vote this year. Show the world that America is still a Great Country of GreatPeople.  Defy those who would ridicule us and prove what ol’ Honest Abe said, “that This Nation, Of the People, By the People and For the People, shall not perish from this earth”!
