I recently met with candidates applying for summer intern positions we offer within our department. It really is a good feeling to offer a young person the opportunity to learn firsthand about the healthcare industry, an industry that I have a strong passion for. They gain practical exposure to our organization through interactions with staff members and are able to work on various healthcare related projects. This gives them a brief glimpse into our world.
The candidates that I met with were working on various degrees and some had recently graduated. Some were majoring in Finance and are currently deciding which direction to go and the healthcare industry is of interest to them. For them, their animated discussion of planning, managing and analyzing (yes, finance does this to some people) made me smile. Another, looking to explore the healthcare field showed a great deal of passion for his initially

chosen profession. I was just (I have no other way to put it) wowed over his passion and energy when discussing his intended future profession. Then there was the young lady that is aiming toward a future in therapy. Her face lit up with joy while discussing where she wants to go in the field of speech therapy.
Needless to say, I came away from these interviews and discussions with these young “adults” heartened by their level of enthusiasm and ambition to succeed in the business world. I feel that judging by the caliber of the young applicants that I met this summer, we, as the “older” generation, can rest assured that our future is indeed in good, caring, capable hands.
About the interns:
The CBO (central billing office) is going paperless! Josh Spiegel (not in the picture) and Mike Pina are working on scanning projects for historical documentation. Ryan is working on projects for Medicare and Medicaid. Jailyne is also working for the CBO on a Medicare project.
Britney is majoring in communication sciences and disorders but is here working with us in Materials Management on various projects. Brandon is a graduate of UCF and is working in the Marketing department to help them with their social media projects.
