Global Handwashing Awareness

Did you know October 15 is Global Handwashing Day?

This annual observance is meant to highlight the importance and increase awareness and knowledge of the benefits of handwashing with soap.

Handwashing with soap is one of the best steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. There are key times when it’s more important than ever to wash our hands, such as when preparing food,  before eating, after coughing, sneezing, blowing our nose or using the bathroom.  Many germs that make people sick are spread when we don’t wash our hands with soap and clean, running water.

Teaching people about handwashing helps them and their communities stay healthy and can:

  • Reduce the number of people who get sick with diarrhea by about 23-40%
  • Reduces absenteeism due to gastrointestinal illness in schoolchildren by 29-57%
  • Reduce diarrheal illness in people with weakened immune systems by about 58%
  • Reduce respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by about 16-21%

Handwashing with soap is not only simple and inexpensive, but it can also dramatically reduce the number of families who get sick.
