MIAMI, FL (June 5th, 2013) — Centro Mater Child Care Services, Inc., a nonprofit organization with five facilities in Miami-Dade County that provides care and education for economically disadvantaged youths, announced it has received $30,000 from Peacock Foundation, Inc., a Miami-based institution that strives to enhance and promote the good health and well being of children, families and the underprivileged. The generous donation will be used toward partial scholarships for 75 preschoolers to attend Centro Mater’s Wellness Summer Camp.
An extension of the organization’s ongoing initiative that encourages healthy lifestyles among children and their families, Centro Mater’s Wellness Camp will be offered at two of its sites, Centro Mater Child Care Center in Little Havana and Centro Mater West II in Hialeah Gardens. The 10-week summer camp—offered June 10 through August 16—will feature a strong emphasis on nutrition and physical fitness. In addition to servicing young minds through literacy, science and art programs, the camp will offer special, wellness-based activities including gardening, healthy cooking classes and daily physical fitness—based on curriculum developed by SPARK, a research-based, public organization that creates and helps to realize kid-focused wellness programs.
“We are extremely appreciative of Peacock Foundation, Inc.’s gracious support,” said Executive Director of Centro Mater, Dr. J. Abilio Rodriguez. “For many disadvantaged youths, summer is a time of reduced stimulation and lack of guidance. But with the help of this donation, many of such children will now have the opportunity to be engaged both mentally and physically—actions that will positively influence their health and future.”
Celebrating its 45th anniversary, Centro Mater Child Care Services, Inc. strives to aid economically disadvantaged families—nearly 1,200 annually—through quality child care and education. With a goal to help youths prosper and their parents and/or guardians become financially independent, Centro Mater caters to children 6 weeks to 12 years of age, and their families, through early child care, pre-school education, after school care, nutrition and development assistance, parent-focused instruction, and summer programs. The organization operates five centers in Miami-Dade County (Miami, Hialeah and Hialeah Gardens), all of which have received accreditations by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
