April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month, and this is our opportunity to educate ourselves about the struggle some people face as they bravely battle this unpredictable disease. However, it is also on us to be sure we are supporting the caregivers who strive to help their loved ones maintain their dignity as they go about their day-to-day lives with this disease.
A big part of the problem from the outside looking in is that this is a disease many people have heard of, but don’t know very much about. Until I took my first psychology class in high school, I honestly associated Parkinson’s with Michael J. Fox and all I even knew with regards to that was that the disease made him shake uncontrollably. That really isn’t even scratching the surface of what Parkinson’s is, and what the people who have it, and those who care for those people are facing on a daily basis.
