As many of you are aware, there has been a lot of buzz about different new ways to merge modern technology with your healthy eating and fitness regimens. I, personally, was not buying it because some of them were expensive and I really didn’t see the point. As for the apps, I tended to forget to keep up with them and log everything I was doing.
Well, the tide has turned and I have recently tried both the FitBit and the Plant Nanny app for smart phones.
With the FitBit, it allows me to track the number of steps I take each day, as well as my sleep patterns. It also can wake me with a silent alarm in the morning instead of waking up to that awful blaring noise we all dread. There are different kinds, some of which allow you to monitor your heart rate during physical activity and if you enter your food intake and activity, it can give you an estimate of how many calories you’ve burned, in addition to how far you’ve walked. They hook up to apps on your phone so you can check up on yourself as you go and they also allow you to connect with friends who have the device, as well. This lets you compete in challenges with your friends and cheer each other on. It’s pretty great and there are other similar products out there that have similar features to help you get and stay on track.

The Plant Nanny app is revolutionary for me. I know I’m always preaching that hydration is important, but I am probably the worst offender when it comes to not drinking enough water throughout the day. This makes it a little more fun by having you choose a virtual plant that you care for. It reminds you to drink by having your plant get “thirsty” periodically throughout the day and every time you take a drink of water, you virtually “water” the plant.
