Happy Birthday America

       “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

     We all know from our school days that Thomas Jefferson invoked these immortal words which are the core of our very essence as Americans. Quite a birthday gift for the new born! Thanks there Tom!
So as we get ready to celebrate our 235th Birthday — gee, I don’t think we look a day over 220 — by going to the beach or park or BBQ at the families’ back yard, let’s not forget to give a thought to the great gift we all share this wonderful day. LIBERTY! Defined as “the condition in which human beings are able to govern themselves, to behave according to their own free will, and take responsibility for their actions”. Oft times coalesced and intertwined with another majestic word – FREEDOM!

     Unfortunately, many of us, certainly myself included, too often take for granted many things in our lives. That loved ones will always be around; that our health will be sound; that friends will never move away or children will stay forever young. Needless to say, these and other parts of our lives are forever undergoing change. But the constant in our lives – the Love of Family, the need to be a good friend and neighbor; entrenches our desire for happiness.

     We’re still relatively the new kid on the block, when compared to civilizations around the world. Yet it is to us they look for the belief that humankind can achieve Peace and Happiness. We’re far from perfect; with many flaws for all to see, but come on, how many couples do you know look like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie???
We still have so much to hold our heads up high and be proud of. Some twenty five years later after writing the Declaration of Independence, in 1801, Mr. Jefferson at the time of his inaugural speech professed to us his venerable wisdom:

“These principles {the freedoms of speech, religion, et.al.} form the bright constellation which has gone before us and guided our steps through an age of revolution and reformation. The wisdom of our sages and blood of our heroes have been devoted to their attainment. They should be the creed of our political faith, the text of civic instruction, the touchstone by which to try the services of those we trust; and should we wander from them in moments of error or of alarm, let us hasten to retrace our steps and to regain the road which alone leads to peace, liberty and safety

     In other words, I believe while only in our infancy of being a country, Thomas Jefferson was already warning us not to take for granted our blessed gifts of Liberty and Freedom. To allay that terrible disease called apathy. We as Americans don’t need a holiday to recognize our greatness. But while we do celebrate one this weekend, we need look no further than our own family and friends, and the happiness we share with them to realize how blessed we are to be able to call ourselves AMERICANS.
