Improving Balance to Prevent Falls

Falls can be terrifying, no matter your age or state of health. Caregivers also know this to be true considering the conditions that often follow, or exacerbate a bad fall. However, if you are older you are likely more susceptible to falls. In fact, studies have shown that one in three people aged 65 or older will suffer a fall, according to the Harvard Health Letter.

This begs the question: what can we change to prevent this from happening? We are often so prepared to jump into action after someone falls, but here are more proactive measures that can be taken to improve balance and decrease the likelihood of a fall occurring in the first place.

Walking aids such as walker and canes can be helpful in this situation, although not everyone is crazy about using these and some complain that they can be inconvenient in terms of portability and storage.

Sometimes, it is something simple causing the falls – possibly a vision issue, which could be corrected with help from your physician. Other cases might warrant more of a balance intervention, and there are a number of ways to improve balance and in turn, prevent falls.
